¡°AMLF 2009¡± Sketch
AFMI Launching Event Feb 2008
Asian Mission Leader¡¯s Forum was held at KL on 2-5 Sep 2009 as an international joint forum between Asian Frontier Mission Initiative and International Society for Frontier Missiology. Around 50 participants joined this Asian initiative and 20 presentations were given in interactive way. The main theme was ¡°Global Cooperation¡±, ¡°Asian Initiative¡± and ¡°Frontier Mission & Insider Perspective¡±.

On 2 Sep, opening service was held at Vision Centre. Rory C. from USCWM shared his congratulatory message whole heartedly by saying ¡°Brothers and sisters, the issues we will be grappling with are as old as the Bible but as new as this morning¡¯s sunrise.... God seems to have a way of challenging our assumptions and driving us back to the scriptures.... We may not leave this place with 100% clarity of how best to help foster a ¡°people within a people¡± among Asia¡¯s diverse ethnic populations, but I pray that we do leave with stronger relationships despite the distances that separate us.¡± And David L. from Philippines gave a passionate preaching talking about the remaining task and frontier mission issues.

Morning devotion was led by Greg P. (GD, USCWM) in the form of inductive Bible study. There was active and interactive sharing of what the participants found, especially the identity issue.
All the presentations prepared by Asian participants were led by AFMI on 3 Sep while the Westerners¡¯ by ISFM on 4 Sep.

Some presentations were dealing with somewhat global issues including how to do nationwide frontier mission mobilization like Korea case presented by Samuel Sung S. K. (GD, KWMA), tent-making issue by John C.(TI), and China underground church & BTJ movements by Thomas L. Caleb K.(GMS)from Kenya proposed cooperation or network between Asia and Africa in serving the M-UPG world and Philip C.(Interserve) introduced what is now going on in Iran in terms of church movements.

One critical issue dealt by some Western presenters is related to the identity issue. Phil E.(OMF) described the outsider¡¯s role in insider movement and David G.(OM) introduced many sources dealing with the conversion issue from various lenses. Les T.(OMF) suggested a new term of inbetweeners to go beyond the insider/outsider binaries by introducing the identity of actors in Acts.
AFMI Opinion Consultation

Among other attractive presentations are the issue of appropriate terms in the Bible translation by Jon C.(OC), creativity as the critical one to help others do the same by Chong K.(BB), some survey report relating to the fruitful practice project by Tod E(OC) and insider movements issues by David L.(CMI).
Besides presentations, Young K. introduced AFMI Training School, mobilizing and equipping Asian workers for the remaining task in frontier mission. (See another separate section for more details on AFMI Training School).

In the evening time all the participants were divided into three issue groups for workshop dealing with ¡°Global Cooperation¡±, ¡°Asian Initiative¡± and ¡°Insider Perspectives¡±. They agreed that those issue groups need continuous follow-up so that the practical and interactive participations can be made for future advance in cooperating globally with Asian initiative in the areas of frontier-insider perspectives. Thus, a consensus was made in such a way that AFMI would pursue more concrete way of facilitating those three issue groups from the association level. Three facilitators serving those issue groups are Chong K., David L., and John K.(INSIDERS), respectively.

On the last day, there was a brainstorming to seek for His will in planning to have a concrete channel of communicating, sharing, and checking the missional ideas and issues we have not only in the field practices but also in the areas of training, mobilization, theology, missiology, and other important areas. John K. presented some rationales and background issues stimulating some thoughts on legitimacy of a new society foundation, called ¡°Asia Society for Frontier Missions¡±.

Some numbers of the participants for the meeting are as follows: 11 nationalities; 14 ministry countries; 21 organizations + a couple of insider believers participating by sharing testimony.
